Great Leaders - Nnamdi Azikiwe and Patrick Henry :: World History

Great Leaders - Nnamdi Azikiwe and Patrick Henry Both Nnamdi Azikiwe and Patrick Henry though they lived more than two hundred years apart from each other, were leaders of their own time. They both lived through unbearable, and inhumane conditions. Nnamdi Azikiwe through slavery in Nigeria, and Patrick Henry through the unbearable things that Great Britain had placed upon the colonists. The conditions in both of their times might have been similar, but certainly not equal. The Africans were under much worse conditions than the colonists. They had to deal with the segregation of all the people around them. Separate benches, and even different restrooms for the Nigerians and the white men. The ex-servicemen didn't get the same privileged that the white men did. They were denied many things. Political freedom, economic security and social emancipation. They had to give up all that was theirs so that others could rule over them. The Nigerians were denied their basic human right that all people get. They were treated as if they of another kind like an animal or beast. Slavery was one of the worst things that the Nigerians had to live through. Working for others, and barely earning what would be just enough for their families, if they even got that, because some didn't get any money if they were stolen, so that other Nigerians could get money. They were sold, traded and t ossed around as if they were not people. They were forced to live under humiliating conditions. The conditions were unbearable to what the average person in America might be able to handle in this day and age. The Nigerians were torn from one of the most basic rights that we have here in America today. The right to freedom, and the pursuit of happiness. Through these conditions it is unnatural to live life, so that is why they needed their freedom. The Americans were treated in a similar way. They were forced to live under laws that today would seem to be the craziest ideas, and they seems like they could never actually happen to anybody, but they did a very long time ago. They were taxed major amounts. They paid taxes on almost every item. There was only tax on the items that they purchased from Great Britain, However they got all their items from Great Britain because there was no other place that they could get these items, so they paid taxes on everything.

Reviewing English in the 21st Century :: essays research papers

Reviewing English in the 21st Century Edited by Wayne Sawyer & Eva Gold Designed for teachers of English, Reviewing English in the 21st Century provides an overview of changes in English teaching in Australia over the last six decades, and the theories behind such changes. This edition also explains current popular theories for teaching English, and suggests methods for implementing them in the classroom. The first section of the book, ‘Reviewing’, relates how new models of English teaching, such as the cultural heritage, skills, personal growth and cultural studies models, have been influenced by developments in learning theories. The second section of the book, ‘Developing and Contextualising†, is concerned with providing effective pedagogies for English teachers in many areas, including ESL students, indigenous students and students with learning difficulties. The final section of the book, ‘Applying’, provides practical applications and student activity suggestions for teaching English, such as methods in drama, media, novels, poetry, visual representations and information technologies. This book focuses on the student as an active participant in their learning, and advocates a student-centred curriculum. By placing value on what the student brings to the classroom, awareness is raised in areas such as youth culture, media and oral practices in English. The significance of traditional English texts is not undermined, however they may be more harshly judged in terms of their relevance to the students (Doecke & McClenaghan, 2004, p. 54). Another strength of the book is the broad spectrum of areas and activities presented for consideration. The syllabus outcomes of reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, representing, thinking and communicating are all addressed, within the differing texts of fiction, poetry, film, non-fiction, drama, media and multimedia. Also, an important structural feature of this book is the accessibility of teaching ideas: all suggestions for classroom applications are highlighted by an indented margin, making them easy to identify from t he theory. One weakness of the book is that it can lend itself to being slightly political. For example, after reviewing the popular models of English teaching, the suggested model is justified by presenting a certain aspect of Government funding, which, when all factors in the wider context are considered, ceases to be an issue (Thompson, 2004, p. 21). Both teachers and student teachers will benefit from reading this book. Besides providing many teaching strategies, lists of books suitable for particular stages of the syllabus are included (Tucker, 2004, pp. 210 – 214), as well as some useful web resources (Sawyer & Watson, 2004, p.

South African Apartheid Essay -- South Africa Apartheid Essays

Have you ever wondered how it would feel to be considered inferior because of your race? The people of South Africa had to endure racial inferiority during the era of apartheid. The apartheid laws the government of South Africa made led to an unequal lifestyle for the blacks and produced opposition. South Africa really began to suffer when apartheid was written into the law. Apartheid was first introduced in the 1948 election that the Afrikaner National Party won. The plan was to take the already existing segregation and expand it (Wright, 60). Apartheid was a system that segregated South Africa’s population racially and considered non-whites inferior (â€Å"History of South Africa in the apartheid era†). Apartheid was designed to make it legal for Europeans to dominate economics and politics (â€Å"History of South Africa in the apartheid era†). Apartheid consisted of a set of unequal laws that favored the whites (â€Å"History of South Africa in the apartheid era†). The Race Classification Act, which divided everyone into four race groups, whites, blacks, coloreds, and Indians were the first of many major laws (Evans, 8). Hundreds of thousands of black South Africans were forced to leave their homes and move into special reservations called â€Å"homelands† or Bantustans that were set up for them (Evans, 8). There were twenty-three million blacks and they were divided into nine tribal groups, Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, North and South Sotho, Venda, Tsonga, Swansi, and South Ndebele, and each group were moved into a separate homeland (Evans, 8). Another major law was the Groups Area Act, which secluded the twenty-three million blacks to 14 percent of land, leaving 86 percent of the land for the 4.8 million (Evans, 9). Under apartheid laws a minority ... ...rry their pass books (â€Å"Black’s resistance to Apartheid†). â€Å"During 1980 there were 304 major incidents concerning struggle with apartheid including arrests, tear gas violence, stoning, and strikes (â€Å"Black’s resistance to Apartheid†). In 1986 violent conflict forced the government to assert a national state of emergency (Wright, 68). The Public Safety Act increased penalties such as fining, imprisonment, and whippings for protesting the law (â€Å"History of South Africa in the apartheid era†). Finally in 1990 De Klerk, president of South Africa unbanned the ANC (‘History of South Africa in the apartheid era†). In 1994 the first free multiracial elections were held and the people voted to end apartheid (â€Å"History of South Africa in the apartheid era†). Nelson Mandela was elected president (Wright, 66). The opposition to apartheid helped turn things around in South Africa.

Attachment in the United States and Amae in Japan Essay

Culture enables people to adjust to their physical as well as social environment. Culture enables the members of society to develop ways of coping with the exigencies of nature as well as ways of harnessing their environment. People also have to learn to relate themselves with others in order to survive. As Schwartz (1998:48) pointed out, the culture of any society represents an adaptation or adjustment to the various conditions of life, including their physical, social, and supernatural environment. No culture is completely static. Every culture is in constant flux; and the changes represent adjustments to the environment. Culture changes at different rates. The changes occur as a result of discoveries, inventions, and cultural borrowing. In some areas, control of the natural environment has been pursued to a point that the society has become endangered. Natural resources, such as bodies of water, forests, plant and animal life and minerals, have been so exploited that the environment is close to destruction. The acceptance of change depends on the exposure of the members of society to new ideas and ways different from their own and their opportunity to accept ideas and ways through diffusion. United States and Japan are belonging to different continents, locations and have different set of people; however, these two countries have similarities in some ways. Its people adapt and practice different cultures. Its culture shapes the behaviors and characteristics of its people that will make them noticeable that these groups of people are come from United States and Japan. Thesis Statement: This study will conduct a cross cultural psychology comparison of Attachment in the United States and Amae in Japan; thus, describes its functions, similarities and differences. II. Discussion A. Its culture, similarities and differences o United States There are a lot of groups of people that reside in United States; whites made up 83. 2 percent of the populations; blacks 11. 7 percent; American Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts 0. 6 percent; Asian and Pacific Islanders 1. 5 percent; and other nonwhites 3. 0 percent. The nonwhite groups are concentrated in various parts of the country. Freedom in matters of education and the right of every child to have an education are basic principles in the United States. Unlike many other nations, the United States does not have a central or federal system of education, Establishing and administering public schools is one of the powers exercised by each state (Fritsch, 2001). The state, in turn, delegates much of this responsibility to local school districts. Literacy in the United States is high just like in Japan. In comparison to Japan (which only has two major religions), no other country in the world has a greater variety of religions, communions, denominations, and sects than the United States. More than 220 religious bodies report membership figures. Nearly all branches of Christianity and almost all Protestant denominations are represented. Japan and United States has the same views when it comes to religion (Katzman, 2003). The United States also believe that religious freedom and separation of church and state should be made. Government cannot interfere with religion or show preference for one religion over another. It cannot set up an official, or established, church, nor give support to any religion or to all religions. In the early days of the republic, United States artists and writers were generally regarded as inferior to those in Europe. Be the end of the 19th century, however, an independent national literature of high quality had been established by renowned writers (O’Neill, 2004). Music in the United States was strongly influenced by European music, and study in Europe was considered a necessary part of musical training far into the 20th century. America’s most influential contribution to music was jazz, a form originated by blacks and based on African rhythms. The musical which evolved from burlesque and operetta, was another American innovation. For many years, architects in the United States simply adapted European styles to American climate, landscape, and materials. The favorable economic position and amount of leisure enjoyed by the people of the United States give them unusual opportunities for recreation. Paid vacations became the rule for most industrial and office workers. The most popular outdoor spectator sports are football and baseball. Horse racing and automobile racing have large followings (Kurelek, 2005). o Japan The Japanese people are largely of Mongoloid stock, but little is known about their specific origin. Successive groups of migrating Asians from the mainland are believed to have settled on the islands some time before 300 A. D. Confronting them were the islands’ earliest known inhabitants— the Ainus, a Japanese people have developed from the mingling of these different ethnic groups. Only a few hundred full-blooded Ainus remain, on Hokkaido. Japanese culture is partly of Chinese origin and partly indigenous, for the Japanese adapted and did not merely imitate the culture of the mainland. Since the middle of the 19th century, Japan has been influenced more by the culture of Western countries than by that of its neighbors (Morton, 2004). Adoption of many Western ways produced sharp contrasts between the new and the old. Buildings and clothing, for example, are now seen in both traditional and Western styles. Among forces that have helped to mold the Japanese character are Buddhist, Shinto, and Confucian religious beliefs, the effects of a long feudal period, and the influences of the Japanese industrial revolution. With industrialization came a change from rural to urban living. American influences have been particularly strong since World War II (Smith, 2005). Moreover, its art has been strongly influenced too by Chinese art. From the mainland came the technique of ink painting on silk and the Buddhist influences in sculpture and painting. Flourishing throughout Japan are no, classical plays in which the actors wear masks depicting their character; bunraku, puppet plays; and kabuki, drama with stylized chanting and dancing. An important part of Japanese culture is the tea ceremony, a highly formal ritual, of which there are many variations. As a way of entertaining guests, it is regarded as the best expression of traditional etiquette. Some of the traditional arts—especially classical Japanese music and dance and the tea ceremony—are part of the repertoire of geisha, female entertainers who perform for groups of men. In addition, the family is a traditional and strong institution in Japan. It has a formal structure with authority vested in the male head of the family. The wife is expected to be subservient. Children learn discipline and their respective roles in the family at an early age. Sons are given preference over daughters, and the eldest son is superior to all others (Elkin, 2004). However, many of the more repressive aspects of the family, such as that of parents determining marriages, have weakened since World War II. Japanese homes are noted for their simplicity. Nearly all are built of wood. In many homes, paper-covered wooden frames, called shoji, are used for windows and doors. Being light and easily moved, they allow much of the house to be opened to the out-of-doors. Some homes are adjoined by landscaped gardens. Rooms usually have thick mats, called tatami, on the floor and very little furniture (Elkin, 2004). With regards to Japanese language and religion, the Japanese language is unrelated to other Oriental tongues. However, it is written in characters that originally adapted from Chinese writing. Furthermore, like in the United States, the Japanese constitution provides for freedom of religion and separation of church and state. The two major religions are Shinto and Buddhism. Many Japanese adhere, in varying degrees, to both. With regards to their education, six years elementary education and three of lower secondary school are free and compulsory for children 6 to 15 years of age. At the three-year upper secondary schools, tuition is charged. Education in Japan is highly competitive, and admission to upper secondary school and to college is determined by rigorous entrance examination. As a result, many Japanese children spend their after-school hours attending jukas, â€Å"cram† schools that specialize in preparing students for entrance examinations and other school tests. Japan has virtually no illiteracy (Christopher, 2003). III. Conclusion In conclusion, as I study the two different cultures, I have realized that United States and Japan have some similarities when it comes to their origin. Japan was most influenced by the Westerners and its origin was contributed by other indigenous groups and so is with United States. Everything that we can see from the Japanese and American culture are already been modified by other influences. However, in spite of the strong adaptation of different culture, Japanese remained their being family-oriented. They value the essence of having a united family; thus, a well-structured family role is formed so that each member can have its function. Unlike with the United States, it is very much influenced by the European settlers and based their competencies in European countries. Its culture is more focused on its development to the extent that internal competencies are suffered. I would say that Japanese culture is superb compared to United States because Japan is able to maintain their traditional ways in spite of economic development. Reference: 1. Fritsch, A. J. (2001). Development of the Renaissance Centralized Church Plan Essay

Analyze the development of the change perform service invent in renascence house decoratorure (15th and 16th centuries). In your exemplifications, imply an analysis of meaning and symbolism.During the spiritual rebirth period, new-made alter church course of studys substantial as a result of a to a greater extent(prenominal)(prenominal) scientific blast to disposition. The idea of microscopic equipoises and measurement emerged by dint of Vitruvius speculation regarding hu opus beings anatomy. Vitruvius described how human corpse, with extended implements of war and legs, fits perfectly into the most primary geometrical shapes travel and fledge. This concept triggered the minds of artists during the spiritual rebirth to wear on a new improvement for church plans (Honour and Fleming 444-445). However, it is non until the fifteenth ampere-second that the concentrate plan was regarded as a divine expression when Alberti discussed scientific manner of ma intaining graven images image finished numeric approach in De Re Aedificatoria, a treatise containing the first full weapons platform of the ideal renascence church (Tavernor 30).From Albertis perspective, a centralize plan should let out idols symbol era keeping stark(a) forms of absolute maths in the construct, indeed the classic-Cross general anatomy is happy (Heydenreich 36). His theory influenced many opposites to realize the importance of the Hellenic-Cross planning method, and this is reflected in works much(prenominal) as S. Sebastiano, Maria Della Carceri and St. nibs. Thus, the classical-Cross centralized church plan was developed, that became the divine figure for Renaissance architecture. The development of classical-Cross plan is derived from Albertis suppositional demands based on Vitruvius basic principles of accuracy and counterbalances. In the early one-sixteenth century, Vitruvius began answering c in tout ensemble into questions regardi ng how a buildings proportion is constructed by dint of with(predicate) human anatomy (Wittkower 22). Such question is further increase through Vitruvian figures haggard within a squ be and propagate became a symbol of the mathematical affinity mingled with man and god through geometry (Wittkower 25). Alberti, who suggested that to obtain architectural matinee idol, one mustiness follow the basic rights of symmetry and proportions, grow on these early ideas. In his treatise, he had specify the laws of symmetry and proportion through the physical characteristics of the human body (Tavernor 40).There, he unite a square and circle to generate the image of the geometrical shapes in relation to human anatomy, identical to Leonard Da Vincis drawing of a man with outstretched limbs located within a circle and square (figure 1). Albertis aspiration was to clarify the ideal architectural spectator for others during the time, through accuracy and precision (Tavernor 40). The H ellenic Cross central plan is developed through lead transformations from the square, square asset one-half, square plus one third, and the square doubled (Murray 58).If these square ratios are employ to architectural plans, more complex figures tummy be produced subsequently the centralized Grecian Cross plan was developed and was a visible expression of the Divine Proportion. (Smith) Albertis obsession over geometrical perfection involved applying his theory within the internal structure as healthful. For example, the height of the mole up to the vaulting in tumid churches should be one-half, two thirds of three canton of the diameter of the plan. These proportions of one to two, two to three, and three to cardinal conform to Albertis law of concord, written in his treatise (Murray 58 58).It was Alberti who convey the theory of beauty in his writing, which became so influential for the High Renaissance. He defined beauty, harmony and concord of either the separate, so that nothing could be added or subtracted boot out for the worse (Smith). From Albertis write up, the symbolism of the Greek Cross is regarded as a bonnie and natural figure, representing every aspect of God due to the precise measurements on all sides of the shape. Therefore, Alberti argued Beauty will result from the comely form and from the correspondence of the whole to the parts, of the parts amongst themselves, and of these again to the whole so that the structures whitethorn appear an complete and complete body (WIttkower 31). He deald to thoroughly appreciate Renaissance architecture, one should understand architecture is not based on theories of function exclusively rather view it as mathematical theory of proportion (Smith).Another moment from the Greek Cross central plan is signifying the development of Renaissance architecture. For Alberti and architects of the Renaissance, the emphasis on classicalism is ideal, which challenges a different approach from the pre vious. Pursuing mathematical order and easiness of pure whites have replaced the papist mediaeval style churches (Heydenreich 27). Also, the prominence of classical features is more suited for Albertis theory of proportion so that all sizes and shapes are defined. A clear example of Renaissance classicism is S. Sebastiano, where Alberti used Greek-Cross plan that shows almost all of his own theoretical requirements as well as several classical elements in the architectural founding (figure 4) (Murray 59).Albertis demean for incorporating classicism, a high flight of locomote and pilasters at the temple front is outstrip supported by architect Palladios correspondence with Albertis ideas buildings in which the exacting Being is invokved and adored should stand in the most noble part of the city, raised above the rest of the citythey ought to be built so that nothing more beautiful could be imagined and those who enter should be transported into a kind of ecstacy in admiring their lenience and beauty. Buildings dedicated to the omnipotent God should be strong and everlasting (Wittkower 31) This idea of acclivity above is coherent to da Vinci Da Vincis principle, which he adhered to in all his envisions (Wittkower 26). S. Sebastiano exemplifies the meticulous image of Renaissance beauty, and developing architectural style beyond the Roman gothic style (Smith).Another example of a building resembling absolute proportion is St. Maria Della Carceri, designed by architect Giuliano Da Sangallo. After Albertis treatise on architecture was published in 1485, the centrally aforethought(ip) church became popular. Many architects during the Renaissance conformed to his law of harmony. Within the same year, the church of St. Maria Delle Carceri was the first Greek-Cross structure built. The entire interior and exterior description of Giuliano da Sangallos church complies with Albertis theoretical demands, demonstrating the impact Alberti made through his egre ss (Wittkower 31).The plan for St. Maria Delle Carceri is based on the two elementary figures of square and circle, where the foresight of the arms is half their length and the four end walls of the hybrid are as long as they are high, and then forming a perfect square (figure 2). The structure contains desirable symbolic feature by integrating a attic in the center. It appeals more to Christianity to represents closure towards heaven or Gods presence. The grand church is viewed as a majestic simplicity, the imperturbable impact of its geometry, the purity of its whiteness are designed to evoke in the faithful a consciousness of the presence of God of a God who has ordered the human race according to immutable mathematical laws, who has created a uniform and beautifully proportioned world, the consonance and harmony of which is mirrored in His temple below. (Wittkower 31)Donato Bramante was other architect who responded to historians theory concerning centralized plan. His designs are similar to da Vinci Da Vincis drawings on centralized plan, where he sketched numerous centrally planned forms and illustrates complex geometrical forms from the first unproblematic shape (figure 5). Da Vincis intentions were interpret Vitruvius explanation more accurately through visual art (figure 1) (Wittkower 25). The importance of these drawings reflects Da Vincis conscious theoretical speculations for which a new technique of representation is produced (Wittkower 25). Although Da Vinci did not build anything, through his illustrations, Bramente was deeply influenced that affected the sixteenth century approach. It is plausibly that those drawings allowed Bramante to comprehended the versatile of geometrical shapes, influencing architecture (figure 4) (Honour and Fleming 444-445).There is even evidence to believe that Bramantes early design for St. turncocks was much influenced by Leonardos drawings of centrally planned structures. (Honour and Fleming 444-445) W hen Bramante was appointed to redesign the Saint Peters at the beginning of the sixteenth century, he envisioned the new it as a grander version of his previous architectural design a central, Greek cross plan building. The design must continue the old-fashioned Roman tradition of domed temples, therefore St. Peters is crowned by an enormous dome. Bramante, like others before him, combined the symbol of the Greek cross with the symbolic values of centralized geometry. (Wittkower 34). Bramante submitted his Greek cross design on a big scale, which reflects Albertis humanist-Christian idea in pure form. In Renaissance thinking, Bramantes St. Peters central plan and dome also symbolized the perfection of God (Honour and Fleming 444-445). Certainly, so overwhelming was Bramantes design that none of his successors could divert his influence (Honour and Fleming 444-445).The impact of the Greek cross was enormous for the development of Renaissance centralized plan. The geometrical figure is a result of Albertis in profundity mathematical approach of viewing nature (Tavonor 42). Many Renaissance architects utilized the Greek Cross plan due to Alberti and other historians theory regarding obtaining architectural beauty. For them, comparing building structures to human anatomy proportion was inwrought in defining what is ideal. More importantly, the Greek cross symbolizes divinity. Vitruvius also discussed the relationship between the human body and geometry, which is crucial for the construct of the Greek cross (Wittkower 25). Such explanation expanded by Alberti influenced the formation in several significant churches, such as the Maria Della Carceri, St. Peters design and S. Sebastiano. Architects who designed these churches corresponded with Albertis argument, therefore demonstrating the coarse acceptance of the Greek Cross.MLA CitationsHeydenreich, L. architecture in Italy, 1400-1500. rev. ed., clean Haven, 1996.Honour and Fleming, The Visual humanities a History, 4th ed, 1995, 444-445.http//www.phs.poteau.k12.ok.us/williame/APAH/readings/Bramantes%20Tempietto,%20St%20Peters,%20Michelangelo.pdfMurray, P.
